We are back from our “Lithuanian Culture in Russian” course in Vilnius, and I already miss the city, our amazing group of learners, and our experiences together! Here is what we did. Every day, we gathered in the beautiful apartment in the center of Vilnius to talk about Lithuanian history as it emerged from our encounters with Alfonsas Nyka-Niliūnas 1938-44 diaries, Mironas Ginkas' book “A Way Through Barbed Wire”, Tomas Venclova’s poems, the unforgettable paintings of Samuel Bak and Stasys Eidrigevičius, and the painful revelations in Rūta Vanagaitė’s book “Our People; Journey with an Enemy”.
We toured Vilnius with outstanding Russian-speaking guides, we went to museums and theaters. We traveled to Kaunas to see the The Ninth Fort and to the Paneriai Memorial just outside of Vilnius.
We made connections, learned from each other, and made discoveries, all in Russian.
